Better Trailers Racing Late Model team driver Scott McPherson has recently returned from competing in three states in the space of a week aboard his # 7 Metalcorp Steel supported Pontiac GP, but he was very disappointed at not achieving his goals of getting onto the podium.
Heading into this busy week long schedule McPherson had ambition of podium finishes, but finished fourth in the declared Grand National event at Tyrepower Parramatta City Raceway (New South Wales) on December 26, a non finish at the Fireball Derby that was staged at Adelaide's Speedway City (South Australia) on January 2, and at Rolling Thunder Raceway - Bacchus Marsh (Victoria) on January 3 the feature race for King of Thunder was cancelled due to track curfew.
“To be honest there isn't too much to crow about, as we were dogged by bad luck and at the rough end of the stick in terms of track curfews,” said McPherson. “We had a lot of speed which I believe would have been good enough to challenge for podium positions, but unfortunately we have come home with little to show for it.”
On Boxing Day (December 26) the Better Trailers Racing team traveled up the Hume Highway from their home base of Canberra (Australian Capital Territory) with plenty of confidence for round seven of the East Coast Late Model series, which the 44-year-old holds a comfortable lead.
McPherson showed plenty of fight during his two heat races which saw him record a third place finish in his heat and suffered a non finish in the other due to a collision with a fellow rival. After being able to fix the damage from the heat two incident McPherson started towards the rear of the field and managed to work his way up to fourth before an incident between two drivers forced officials to declare the event.
For the running of the second annual Fireball Derby that was set down for New Years day (January 1 - 2006) at Adelaide's Speedway City rained forced the cancellation of the original date and it was rescheduled to the following night (January 2). By finishing fourth and second respectively in his two qualifying heat races and placing fourth in the stars dash this put McPherson in good stead for the 40-lap final.
“Yeah, up until the feature race everything was going along nicely and I was fairly confident that I could finish on the podium,” recalled McPherson. “In the early stages of the final I held down second only to have a brakeless rival slammed into the side of me unintentionally which put us out.”
With minimal damage sustained to the # 7 Pontiac GP, the Better Trailers Racing team ventured over to Victoria for the King of Thunder event at Rolling Thunder Raceway the next night (January 3).
This meeting for McPherson got off to a solid start when he powered away from the field in the opening, but that joy was short lived when he suffered a broken shock absorber which was enough to put him out of the running after only a single lap. While in the second heat McPherson placed sixth.
Due to the track curfew at Rolling Thunder Raceway, the feature race was canceled.
“There isn't much to say about Rolling Thunder Raceway except that it was very disappointing to have our feature race canceled, not only from a personal point of view, but for the other drivers who traveled a long way to be part of this event,” remarked McPherson.
McPherson and his Better Trailers Racing team will now take a one month break before traveling up to Brisbane International Raceway - Queensland for round eight of the East Coast Late Model series on Saturday, February 11.
